In all Conscience
It has been out for a while: Some colleagues and me recently wrote a book about computer science and ethics aimed to help teachers in schools and universities with some case studies: Gewissensbisse (German). Right now, my very own inner geek and grammar and spelling proofreader-ninja is finishing a 3rd book which will be printed to order, I think. More on that in some weeks. :}

Putting on the Brakes
Data retention law came into effect on January, 1 2008 here in Germany. A complaint before the German Federal Constitutional Court is still pending for many months, but finally there will be a hearing on December, 15. Mark your calendar. I will surely mark my own because I have a subpoena and will be speaking there as an expert of the Chaos Computer Club. It's always difficult trying to predict how the court will come out based on the questions the justices will be asking at a hearing. However, it will surely be a substantial test on whether or not the right to privacy holds for the future. I refuse to be intimidated by my own government and anybody else collecting information about my private life, therefore I protect my data. I feel, this is a righteous fight for the right reasons. But in case of data retention this is getting almost impossible for a person who is owning a lot of devices that are traceable. Well, but there is always room for hope, the court could still stop the security hysterics ruling our country.
